REP. JOHNSON ANNOUNCES DOD APPROPRIATIONS

$2.5 Million for Nanomedical Technologies at U. of I.

Washington, D.C. -  U.S. Rep. Timothy V. Johnson today announced a $2.5 million grant for University of Illinois Nanomedical Technologies Research. The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Defense appropriation approved by the House of Representatives on Sunday.

The appropriation also includes $1 million for Creative Thermal Solutions Inc. of Urbana for development of a miniature cooling unit for our soldiers that is smaller, lighter and more mobile than current cooling units.

“This is great news for the University of Illinois, for the cause of medicine, and of course in the case of Creative Thermal Solutions, for our troops,” said Rep. Johnson. “The strength of the research enterprise here continues to demonstrate itself in the acquisition of these awards and I am proud to advocate for them.”

“This is great news and we thank Congressman Johnson for his strong support and leadership in obtaining funding which will clearly enhance our state land grant mission,” said Richard H. Herman, Chancellor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“This funding will lead to advances in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as find new ways to design drugs and detect biohazards by extending the advanced methods of nanotechnology to the realm of biology and medicine,” said Ilesanmi Adesida who is the Dean of the College of Engineering and the Director of the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The U of I appropriations are part of nearly $10 million in appropriations Rep. Johnson has been able to obtain for the 15th Congressional District far this year. The appropriations approved by the House must still be approved by the Senate and joint conference committees.
