New Senior Housing Center In Harvey Named For Congressman Jackson

Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. - pictured with YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago President and CEO Stephen S. Cole - was honored today in a ceremony celebrating the construction of a new 60-unit YMCA Senior Housing Center in Harvey. The Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. Senior Center, which will be constructed at the site of the former Dixie Square Mall, was funded through a $7,417,400 federal grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. The development represents Phase I of a $15 million, 120-unit low-income housing initiative. The YMCA was awarded a second grant for Phase II in October, 2004.
"I am honored to be recognized as a proponent for safe, sanitary, and affordable housing for all Americans, and as an advocate for the YMCA's HUD-sponsored senior housing facilities. I particularly appreciate that the development will be constructed on the site of the former Dixie Square Mall," the congressman said.
"The last time this property was utilized, Joliet Jake and Elwood Blues drove through the mall on a 'mission from God' in the movie The Blues Brothers. Today, 25 years later, we are putting this property to good use by providing new and affordable housing for our senior citizens," Jackson said.
"This project helps address a growing demand for affordable housing in the Chicago area, particularly for seniors," he said.
All units will be handicapped accessible or adaptable and include a living-dining room area, bedroom with closets, kitchen, and private bath. Common areas include a meeting room, lounge area with an entertainment center, a craft room, a library, and a computer room. A full-time social service coordinator will assist the residents on site.
