BEAN SUPPORTS U.S. TROOP READINESS, VETERANS’ HEALTH AND IRAQ ACCOUNTABILITY ACT

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Melissa Bean (IL-08) voted in favor of H.R. 1591, the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health and Iraq Accountability Act.  The following is her statement on the vote:

“One of my highest priorities since taking office has been advocating greater accountability from Washington.  Nowhere is that more important than ensuring the safety of our troops and our nation. I voted in favor of this legislation because it reasonably holds the President accountable to his own performance standards for military readiness and Iraqi progress.  This bill provides long overdue accountability for the progress we should be making, improves troop readiness and protection, and provides our veterans with the kind of care that has been sorely lacking.    This bill also provides a responsible guideline for phased redeployment of U.S. troop focus from sectarian violence to fighting terrorism and training Iraqi forces so they can provide for their own security.  With this legislation, Congress is exercising oversight and accountability in the management of the war, instead of an ineffective rubber stamp, stay-the-course policy.”
