New Display for American Indian Heritage Month in the Law Library of Congress

To celebrate American Indian Heritage Month in November, the Law Library, custodian of one of the nation¹s finest collections of federal laws and congressional documents relating to the American Indian, will mount a small exhibit, "Many Nations: American Indian Holdings in the Law Library of Congress," opening Oct. 31.

The exhibit will focus on the Law Library's collection, as well as illustrate how American Indian law can be understood through material objects, such as a snake pot (sign of legal rank) and peace pipes made by Catawba artisans William Branham and Fred Sanders. The exhibit will also highlight a recently issued publication, Many Nations: A Library of Congress Resource Guide for the Study of Indian and Alaskan Native Peoples of the United States.

Remarks at the opening will be delivered by Rep. John M. Spratt (D-S.C.) on Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. in the Law Library Conference Room to be followed by a program with comments, music and slides by some of the contributors to Many Nations. The exhibit features posters from the Prints and Photographs Division of famous Indian leaders Jack Red Cloud, Geronimo, Sitting Bull and Chief Joseph.

Items on display may be viewed in the Law Library Reading Room, LM 201, and in the foyer of the Law Library administration offices, LM 240, in the James Madison Building at 101 Independence Avenue S.E. The display will be on view through January 1998, during the Law Library's hours: Law Library Reading Room: Mon., Wed. and Thur. 8:30 a.m.--9:30 p.m. Tues. and Fri. 8:30 a.m.--5 p.m. Sat. 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Law Library Mon.-Fri. administrative offices: 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
