Postal Cancellation To Celebrate Library's Jefferson Building Centennial

On Nov. 4, to mark the centennial of the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will issue a commemorative postal cancellation. USPS will open a special postal sub- station for that day in the Jefferson Building's Great Hall, where the special cancellations will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Members of the public may bring their own envelopes with first class stamps affixed to obtain the official Library of Congress cancellation. Or they may purchase plain envelopes from the Library¹s Sales Shop in the Jefferson Building, to which they can affix a first- class stamp. The USPS will be selling pre-stamped and canceled commemorative envelopes for 32 cents each in the Library¹s Great Hall as long as supplies last. Also for sale at the temporary postal sub-station in the Library¹s Great Hall on Nov. 4 will be a selection of older stamps, many of them relating to topics in the Library's collections, such as baseball, the Civil War, jazz, the movies, and cartoons.
