Historian Pauline Maier To Discuss the Declaration of Independence at the Library of Congress on July 1
Pauline Maier, a leading historian of the American
Revolution, will discuss her new book, American Scripture:
Making the Declaration of Independence, at the Library of
Congress on Tuesday, July 1, at 6 p.m. The presentation,
part of the Center for the Book's "Books & Beyond" series,
will take place in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of
the Library's James Madison Memorial Building. It is free
and open to the public.
In American Scripture, Ms. Maier tells the story of
America through its most fundamental document. The book
will be published by Alfred A. Knopf Inc. on July 4, 1997.
Pauline Maier has taught at Harvard University, the
University of Massachusetts, the University of Wisconsin,
Yale University, and the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, where she is currently a professor of American
history. Her previous books include From Resistance to
Revolution (1972) and The Old Revolutionaries: Political
Lives in the Age of Samuel Adams (1980). She will be
featured in several upcoming television specials, including
an Arts & Entertainment Network program about the Fourth of
July and the PBS "Liberty," scheduled for broadcast this
fall.
The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was
established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books,
reading, and libraries.
