Historian Pauline Maier To Discuss the Declaration of Independence at the Library of Congress on July 1

Pauline Maier, a leading historian of the American Revolution, will discuss her new book, American Scripture: Making the Declaration of Independence, at the Library of Congress on Tuesday, July 1, at 6 p.m. The presentation, part of the Center for the Book's "Books & Beyond" series, will take place in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the Library's James Madison Memorial Building. It is free and open to the public.

In American Scripture, Ms. Maier tells the story of America through its most fundamental document. The book will be published by Alfred A. Knopf Inc. on July 4, 1997.

Pauline Maier has taught at Harvard University, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Wisconsin, Yale University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she is currently a professor of American history. Her previous books include From Resistance to Revolution (1972) and The Old Revolutionaries: Political Lives in the Age of Samuel Adams (1980). She will be featured in several upcoming television specials, including an Arts & Entertainment Network program about the Fourth of July and the PBS "Liberty," scheduled for broadcast this fall.

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading, and libraries.
