August 30, 1995Contact: Guy Lamolinara (202) 707-9217Project Coordinator Named for Decade of the BrainSherry Levy-Reiner has been named the new coordinator for the interagency project on the Decade of the Brain at the Library of Congress. Dr. Levy-Reiner will work with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to introduce new developments in brain research to members of Congress, their staff and the public. In 1990, President George Bush signed a proclamation recommended by a joint congressional resolution to designate the 1990s as the Decade of the Brain. Since then, the Library of Congress and NIMH have cooperated in a series of six symposia focusing on neuroscientific advances that brought together leading scientists in a variety of disciplines to report on their work. The first of several publications to be based on symposia papers, Neuroscience, Memory, and Language, has just been published. Prior to joining the Library of Congress, Dr. Levy-Reiner was director of publications and public information at the Association of American Colleges & Universities. Before that, she had been editor of publications at the Menninger Foundation and special projects editor in the development and information offices at the University of Chicago. She received her Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literatures from the University of Cincinnati in 1980. The project on the Decade of the Brain is an interagency initiative cosponsored by the Library of Congress and the National Institute of Mental Health to advance the goals set forth in a proclamation by President George Bush designating the 1990s as the Decade of the Brain "to enhance public awareness of the benefits to be derived from brain research" through "appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities." The project sponsors symposia and publications aimed at introducing members of Congress, their staff and the general public to cutting-edge research on the brain. The project also encourages dialogue on the ethical, philosophical and humanistic implications of these discoveries. At the Library of Congress, the Project on the Decade of the Brain is administered by the Office of Scholarly Programs. # # # PR 95-121 |
