Librarian of Congress Names 25 More Films to National Film Registry
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced today his
annual selection of 25 films to be added to the National Film
Registry. (See attached list.)
The registry was created by the Congress in 1988 to recognize
American films that are "culturally, historically, or
aesthetically" significant. The list announced today brings the
total number of films placed on the registry to 125.
The Librarian also announced that the Library of Congress and
the National Film Preservation Board are planning a national
tour of films with the private support of the Library's Madison
Council and with the cooperation of the copyright owners. The
Librarian also said he expects to deliver to Congress a
comprehensive national plan for film preservation by the middle
of next year, as directed by the National Film Preservation Act
of 1992.
Archival "best quality" prints of films named to the National
Film Registry are preserved at the Library of Congress where
copies are available for research and study. The Library
contains the largest collection of film and television in the
world, from the earliest surviving copyrighted motion picture to
the latest feature releases.
