Library of Congress Publishes Donated Book Programs Handbook
With sponsorship by its Center for the Book, the Library of
Congress has just published Donated Book Programs: A Dialogue
of Partners Handbook, based on the proceedings of the Dialogue
of Partners International Workshop on Donated Books held in
Baltimore, Maryland, on September 14-16, 1992.
Organized by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Canadian Organization for
Development through Education (CODE), and the International Book
Bank (IBB), the workshop was convened to encourage greater
effectiveness in donated book programs by bringing together
representatives of the various participants--program
administrators, funders, book donors, distributors, and
recipients. Ninety-five delegates from 44 countries attended
the meeting. The Center for the Book was one of the workshop's
18 organizational sponsors.
In his preface, Center for the Book director John Y. Cole
describes donated book programs as "an important way of sharing
books between countries and peoples." The illustrated, 104-page
handbook contains many useful ideas, recommendations, and
guidelines that can be shared with a wide audience.
Donated Book Programs is divided into three parts. Part I
summarizes the proceedings of the workshop and Part II is a
practical guide for implementing a donated book program. Part
III is a directory listing the workshop participants along with
their address, telephone number, and a brief description of
their organization.
Donated Book Programs: A Dialogue of Partners Handbook is

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was
established in 1977 to stimulate public awareness and
appreciation of books, reading, and libraries, and to encourage
the study of the role of books in society. Its projects and
those of its affiliated state centers are supported by private
contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
