Vice President Al Gore and Librarian of
Congress Plan Conference on Delivery of Electronic Information
The Library of Congress will convene a one-day conference on
Wednesday, July 14, entitled "Delivering Electronic Information in
a Knowledge-Based Democracy." James H. Billington, Librarian of
Congress, will chair the meeting, and Vice President Al Gore is the
honorary chairman. Invited participants will include some 35 high-
level leaders from government, industry, and the academic, library,
and user communities.
The goal of the conference is to help build a consensus on the
policy framework needed to promote development of electronic
information resources. The conference will focus on three primary
elements of that framework: (1) building, locating and preserving
the electronic store of knowledge; (2) public/private sector roles;
and (3) mechanisms for safeguarding intellectual property rights.
