American Folklife Center Concerts Scheduled
The American Folklife Center will open its 1993 Neptune Plaza
Concert Series with a performance by three groups of master
performers and their apprentices from the Washington, D.C.,
Commission on the Arts Master/Apprenticeship program on Thursday,
April 15, 12 noon - 1:30 p.m. in the Mumford Room, sixth floor,
James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. SE (Capitol
South Metro.)
The first concert will include a North Indian sitar player and
Bengali tabla player; toasting and dub plate making artists (a form
of Jamaican rap and reggae recording), and a gospel quartet.
Except for this first concert, all concerts will be held on the
steps of the Library's Jefferson Building, 12 noon - 1:30 p.m. The
concerts are free. The complete schedule follows:
April 15: DC Master/Apprenticeship Program (indoors).
May 20: Tom Doherty, Maureen Doherty-Macken and Mick
Moloney playing traditional Irish music.
June 17: Northern Lights (bluegrass).
July 15: Gospel singing from the greater Washington area.
August 19: Frankie Manning, one of the original Whitey's Lindy
Hoppers, performing jitterbug with Baltimore dancer
Leslie Coombs and a six piece band headed by
drummer Brooks Tegler.
September 16: Hispanic performance in honor of National Hispanic
Heritage Month (to be announced).
All the concerts are taped live and will be broadcast by WAMU-FM at
a later date.
