Exhibit, Reading To Honor Pablo Neruda

The Library of Congress will honor the 25th anniversary of Pablo Neruda's receipt of the Nobel Prize for Literature with an exhibit and reading during the month of September. On September 4, an exhibition entitled "Pablo Neruda: Absence and Presence" will open in the foyer of the Mumford Room, sixth floor, James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. (Open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) The exhibit, which will continue through October 18, consists of 35 portraits and photographs of Neruda, his circle, and friends and features the work of Chilean photographer Luis Poirot.

On September 17 at 6 p.m. in the Mumford Room, the Embassy of Chile and the Library of Congress will present a bilingual reading of Neruda's poems along with a panel discussion. Participants will include Alastair Reid of The New Yorker and Neruda's translator; Marie Arana-Ward, editor of "Book World" in The Washington Post, Mario Rojas, literary critic and professor at Catholic University of America, and Georgette Dorn, chief of the Library's Hispanic Division. The event is free and open to the public.
