New Orleans, La. – General Douglas O'Dell, Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding, today called the groundbreaking at the C.J. Peete Housing Development to be rebuilt as a multi-income community a significant step in restoring housing in New Orleans.

O'Dell commended the local government, the Housing Authority of New Orleans, U.S. Secretary Housing and Urban Development, Steve Preston, and the New Orleans Neighborhood Collaborative for their commitment to work together for the good of the people on this project.

"When government at all levels, stakeholders and the private sector work together to move projects forward, they get results for those who count most: local citizens," O'Dell said. "This groundbreaking demonstrates the results being achieved due to partnerships forged at all levels of government, the private and non-profit sector, and the Bush Administration's leadership and commitment to work with all interested parties to rebuild this grand city. It marks yet another milestone in the continuous work to rebuild the greater Gulf Coast."

This is the second public housing groundbreaking in as many months. These planned communities will bring much-needed affordable rental housing units for displaced residents and those who want to live in New Orleans.

"Thanks to the dedication and perseverance of so many, we are in New Orleans again with shovels in hand," said Steve Preston, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. "As we celebrate the start of a new year, we also rejoice in knowing this day has come for the families of C.J. Peete. They waited for new housing and a new community brimming with hope for future generations who will come to call this place home."

The Office of the Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding has been engaged in facilitating and streamlining the recovery effort, providing key federal support and resources to state and local leaders, as well as reinforcing the federal government's commitment to the people of the Gulf Coast.
