1993 Summary: National Hospital Discharge Survey Advance Data 264. An estimated 30.8 million inpatients, excluding newborn infants, were discharged from short-stay non-Federal hospitals in the United States in 1993. These patients used 184.6 million days of inpatient hospital care. The discharge rate was 120.1 discharges per 1,000 civilian population and the average length of stay was 6.0 days. The statistics presented in this report are based on data collected by the National Hospital Discharge Survey, a continuous survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics since 1965.
