Facility Picture

The New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System (NMVAHCS) strives to provide the highest quality primary, secondary, and tertiary health care to its beneficiaries through a compassionate, innovative health care system, excellent training and education of health care professionals, and effective use of available resources. The Albuquerque Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is a Level 1 tertiary referral center with a 24-hour Emergency Room located in the heart of the Land of Enchantment. The medical center is authorized to operate 310 beds, which include 184 acute hospital beds (including a 26 bed Spinal Cord Injury Center), 90 residential rehabilitation treatment program beds (including a 26 bed Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program [PRRTP], a 24 bed Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program [SARRTP], a 40 bed Domiciliary RRTP), and a 36-bed Nursing Home Care Unit.  The NMVAHCS is a proud member of Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 18, located in Mesa, Arizona.


Affiliations

The New Mexico VA Health Care System has a major affiliation with the University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNMSOM) with 122.1 resident FTE currently rotating through 33 clinical residency-training programs.  UNM is New Mexico's only medical school and the Albuquerque VAMC is the only VA hospital.  Together they serve as invaluable resources for the state.  The NMVAHCS also enjoys affiliations with the University of New Mexico and Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute for nursing programs and with nearly 70 other academic institutions for other types of training.
