Washington, DC – Congressman Glenn Nye will be formally sworn into the 111th Congress as the Representative from Virginia’s 2nd District this afternoon in a ceremony on the floor of the House of Representatives.

“I’m deeply honored by the responsibility that the people of the 2nd District have entrusted to me. There are serious challenges facing our country and Hampton Roads, and I’m looking forward to starting the serious work of supporting our military, creating jobs, and getting our economy moving again now,” said Congressman Glenn Nye.

Just hours before taking the oath of office, Congressman Nye learned that he had won his first major victory in Washington – securing a seat on the influential House Armed Services Committee. The assignment will put Nye in a strong position to help the Hampton Roads community as Congress addresses critical issues, including the Navy’s possible reassignment of an aircraft carrier.

This Saturday, Congressman Nye will attend the commissioning ceremony for the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, the George H.W. Bush, in Norfolk.

Nye also marked his first day in the new Congress by helping to lead a bipartisan effort for fiscal responsibility. Nye joined over fifty other Representatives, from both parties, to introduce a bill that would block the nearly $4,700 pay raise that Members of Congress are scheduled to receive next year.

“Members of Congress shouldn’t be getting pay raises while their constituents are losing their jobs,” said Congressman Nye. “I’m committed to fiscal discipline, and starting today, I will work with Democrats and Republicans to restore fiscal responsibility to Washington.”

A fifth-generation Hampton Roads resident and former Foreign Service Officer, Nye has volunteered to serve in conflict zones around the world including Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.
