Columbia, SC – Harendra Kumar Patel was
arrested on Wednesday September 3, 2008 by the U.S. Marshals. Deputy
Marshals advise Patel has been a fugitive from the Crown Court of Leicester,
England after allegedly being charged with Fraudulent Evasion of the Duty
Payable on Goods over One Million Dollars. South Carolina Marshals arrested
Patel at the Blue Bay Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC.
U.S. Marshals from North and South Carolina
assisted in the investigation of this case to include service of the warrant
for the federal charge of Fugitive from Foreign Country (18 USC 3184). The
investigation began in Charlotte, NC. Leads developed in the case took
Deputies from Charlotte, NC to Greensboro, NC and finally to Myrtle Beach,
SC where Patel was arrested with out incident. The fugitive was booked into
Florence County Detention Center to await court proceedings.
In announcing the arrest U.S. Marshal Johnny
Mack Brown states “cooperation with international law enforcement is making
it harder for fugitives to hide even outside their borders. He will now have
to return to London to face his pending charges.”

Locally, Operation Intercept arrested over 2,500 South Carolina fugitives
