8 Inmates Escape From New Mexico Jail,
Including Murderer |

Midland, TX – Eight inmates, including a
convicted murderer and another man charged with murder, escaped from the
Curry County Jail in Clovis, New Mexico by cutting a hole in the roof. One
of the men has been captured by Clovis Police, but the other seven remain at
large.
The men were discovered missing at 9:45 p.m. Sunday when Clovis Police
noticed two people in orange jumpsuits running near the jail, the Sheriff’s
Office said. The inmates apparently had used handmade instruments to cut the
hole in the roof.
One of the missing inmates is Edward Salas, who was recently convicted in
the murder of a 10-year-old boy. Shots were fired through the child’s
bedroom as he slept.
Another escapee, Larry McClendon, was charged with murder and aggravated
robbery in the January 2007 death of a secondhand store owner.
U.S. Marshals in New Mexico and Texas have taken the lead to locate and
apprehend these dangerous fugitives with assistance from other law
enforcement agencies, including the Texas Rangers.
Phill Maxwell, Division Supervisor with the U.S. Marshals in Midland said,
“At this time, we do not have specific leads indicating that the escapees
are in our area. We know that some of them have connections in Texas, and we
are tracking down any available leads. We would ask that, if anyone spots
any of these people, to please call authorities right away, or call Crime
Stoppers in your area. These are very dangerous individuals, and they are
desperate. Please do not attempt to act on your own.
