Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of the Fourth Annual National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day:

“Across the country, annual AIDS rates are increasing faster among Asian American and Pacific Islander communities than in other racial and ethnic communities.

“Stigma, discrimination, silence and shame exacerbate the HIV epidemic, creating barriers to testing and care services. We must break this silence and talk about HIV with our children, grandchildren, and extended family.

“On this day, we renew our commitment to combat this epidemic. It is our moral imperative to do so.”
