Encased in this handmade glass paperweight is a vintage stamp honoring George Gershwin. Considered one of America's greatest composers and songwriters, Gershwin was essentially self-taught. He began writing popular songs in his teens. Later, he combined jazz and classical sounds in his concert music and black folk music and opera in works such as Porgy and Bess. The 8" stamp was issued by the United States Postal Service on Wednesday February 28, 1973, as part of the American Arts Issue. Embedded in the paperweight are the words "The Library of Congress" along with Gershwin's words "True music...must repeat the thought and inspirations of the people and of the time.
