Taken from Exploring the Early Americas exhibit, this fine handmade glass paperweight depicts the image of one of America's earliest artifacts. The Vessel with Maya Scribes which dates back to AD 600, was created of ceramic in the Guatamalan lowlands by the Mayan. This vessel, from the heartland of Maya civilization in Northern Guatemala, is decorated by a limited palette (red, black, and cream) and is devoted to a scribal theme. The figures on the vessel are a human scribe and the god of scribes, Itzam, identified as such by iconic imagery and glyphs. This actual artifact and more can be viewed on display here at the Library of Congress, in the Exploring the Early Americas exhibit.
