HARMAN STATEMENT ON NAMING OF REP. SILVESTRE REYES AS INCOMING CHAIR OF HOUSE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE

Pledges her "full and enthusiastic support"

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-CA) today released the following statement in response to Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) being named Chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence for the 110th Congress.

"I offer my sincere congratulations to my friend and colleague Silver Reyes on being named Chair of the House Intelligence Committee.

"Several days ago, I called Silver to offer him my full and enthusiastic support should he be named Chair, and I called him again today.

"I have enjoyed working closely with Silver and other members over four congresses on a committee that I dearly love.  He brings great experience from his work on HPSCI, the Armed Services Committee and as head of the Border Patrol in El Paso.

"I will do everything I can to make the transition a smooth one.  I remain passionate about the issues, and will stay actively involved in security matters on the Homeland Security and Energy & Commerce Committees, as well as with SecureUS - the political action committee I established last year to train candidates and elected officials on national security policies and messages.

"I leave this position with incredible respect for the women and men of the Intelligence Community.  They operate in austere places often under cover and under fire, and I have visited with them in virtually every corner of the world.

"I pledge to them that I will continue to look after their interests and the interests of the intelligence industrial base that is largely centered in my congressional district in California."
