Rights and Restrictions Information
Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., 20540-4730
Photographs credited to Magnum can be found in many collections
in the Prints & Photographs Division. No instrument of gift
exists for those photographs acquired from Magnum, and no correspondence
has been found that clearly states what rights Magnum holds. In
a recent telephone conversation, Magnum informed the Library that
it still represents many of the photographers who have works in
the Division's collections. Privacy and publicity rights may also
apply.
Access: Permitted; subject to P&P policy on
serving originals.
Reproduction (photocopying, hand-held camera copying,
photoduplication and other forms of copying allowed by "fair
use"): Permitted;
subject to P&P policy on copying.
Publication and other forms of distribution: May be
restricted. Magnum is a photo agency that was founded by photographers
to market their photographs while protecting the rights of photojournalists.
Normally Magnum Photos, Inc., sells the usage rights to photographs taken
by its photographers. Magnum asserts that copyright is held by the photographer.
Therefore, patrons are advised to check for copyright before publishing
or otherwise distributing photographs credited to Magnum. Privacy and
publicity rights may also apply. While Magnum cannot control use of published
P&P images that are not protected by copyright, patrons are advised
that Magnum is still in business and has expressed interest in the use
of its images. Magnum may be contacted at:
