A Bold Stroke for Freedom. Somehow these escaped slaves acquired firearms to protect themselves against the bounty hunters who chased them. If they were captured, they knew they could be kept in fenced pens and deprived of food and water until they named their owners. They were almost certain to be punished when the owner reclaimed them. Therefore, they had little choice but to resist. The wagon would have enabled the group to travel quickly over country roads, but at the risk of being more easily spotted.
