Taken from Exploring the Early Americas exhibit, this fine handmade glass paperweight depicts the image from one of the earliest documentations on the Americas. From the book titled, Vues de Cordilleres et Monuments des Peuples Indeigenes de L'Amerique on translated, From Views of...Monuments and Indigenous Peoples of America which dates back to 1810, written by Huboldt, the great German geographer and naturalist, who published extensively on physical geography, geology, zoology, botany, astronomy, and almost parenthetically, archaeology. Humboldt traveled throughout cuba, Central America, and South America (especially the Orinoco river basin and the Andean highlands) from 1799 to 1804. The Vues des Cordilleres is notable for its beautiful aquatint plates of scenes in South and Central America made after Humboldt's original sketches This actual artifact and more can be viewed on display here at the Library of Congress, in the Exploring the Early Americas exhibit.
