Taken from Exploring the Early Americas exhibit, this fine handmade glass paperweight depicts the image of one of America's earliest artifacts. The Monumental Jaguar Sculpture which dates back to AD 600, was created of ceramic in Mexico by the Mayan. The jaguar is extremely important in Maya cosmology, since jaguars are not only the special patrons and protectors of kings but are also the deities representing the sun in its nocturnal aspect. This particular sculpture is unusual because it is a full figure. Originally, it may have flanked the throne of a Maya lord or king. This actual artifact and more can be viewed on display here at the Library of Congress, in the Exploring the Early Americas exhibit.
