WASHINGTON – Today Co-Chairs of the House Beef Caucus, Rep. Bob Beauprez (R-Colo) and Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif), welcome China's decision to reopen its market to U.S. beef exports during the 17th annual meeting of the Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT). As China's market has remained closed to U.S. beef and beef products since December 2003, this decision is a positive step forward in normalizing trade relationships with U.S. companies, farmers and ranchers.
"I commend Secretary Johanns, Secretary Gutierrez and Ambassador Portman for their efforts on behalf of American cattlemen to secure the same access to Chinese markets as China has to our markets," said Beauprez. "This decision reflects the scientific evidence that U.S. beef is perfectly safe."
"I am very pleased by China's decision to resume importation of American beef products," said Cardoza. "I look forward to working with the House Beef Caucus, Secretary Johanns and Ambassador Portman to advance the interests of the U.S. beef industry by opening critical import markets throughout the world."
The House Beef Caucus is comprised of over 48 Members of the House of Representatives committed to advocating for the U.S. beef and cattle industry. The Caucus raises awareness of issues impacting the industry and educates and informs members of the House and their staff about cattle and beef production in the United States. The House Beef Caucus provides Members the opportunity to speak as a collective voice about the importance ranching plays in the United States and to utilize the opportunities in Congress to help ranchers succeed.
