WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, is pleased announce that Mercedes Martinez is the winner of this year’s Congressional Art Competition for high school students in the 18th District. Ms. Martinez is a senior at Central Valley High School (CVHS) in Ceres. Her winning entry, entitled Stanislaus Live in Color, is a digital photography mosaic featuring iconic images of Modesto, CA that are recognizable to all Central Valley residents.

Later this month Ms. Martinez and a member of her family will visit Washington, DC to attend an award ceremony, participate in a workshop with professional artists, and see the picture hung in the busy tunnel connecting the U.S. Capitol with the Cannon House Office Building. The picture will remain on display for one year and then be returned to the artist.

“I congratulate Mercedes on her winning entry and would like to thank all those high school artists who participated in the competition,” said Cardoza. “This impressive annual competition showcases the immense creative talent in the 18th district. I look forward to pointing out this representation of Valley artwork to friends and colleagues as I pass through the Cannon tunnel on my way to cast votes on the House floor.”
