WASHINGTON-- Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., today announced that the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will receive $9.9 million to purchase up to 94 replacement buses and make facility improvements statewide. This grant funding will be awarded through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. "It's important to the health of public transportation that we have a quality system that gets passengers to their destinations reliably and safely," Levin said. "We are delighted that the FTA has awarded this funding to so many cities and counties across Michigan, and we look forward to seeing the improvements that this grant will help bring not only to individual systems but throughout the state, as well."
This funding will help revitalize bus systems in many Michigan cities as well as in 26 rural areas. In addition to the replacement of buses, the grant will help with the construction of administrative/maintenance facilities in both Detroit and Monroe County. The FTA provides financial and technical assistance to local transit systems. These grants were awarded from Fiscal Year 1999 funds allotted to the Department of Transportation.
