Levin Announces Millions for K.I. Sawyer Conversion Efforts

WASHINGTON Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., today announced that the Marquette County will receive almost $2.9 million to assist the conversion efforts at the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. This grant funding will be awarded through the Economic Development and Adjustment Assistance Program at the Economic Development Administration (EDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

"I am delighted to hear this good news, but not surprised," Levin said. "There's a very dedicated and talented group of people working hard to turn K.I. Sawyer into a first-rate airport facility. We have been singing their praises for a long time, so it is rewarding to see Marquette County and K.I. Sawyer get this well-deserved recognition."

As one of the local groups working to convert the former air force base into a civilian airport facility, Marquette County plans to use this grant funding for large-scale improvements such as renovating an existing building for use as a general terminal, converting three buildings to aircraft hangars and upgrading the infrastructure of water, wastewater and road systems. Also, the County will be able to construct a new public safety building and make general building improvements, such as adding handicap access and converting heating systems.

Created in 1965, the EDA provides assistance to help retain and generate jobs in rural and urban areas that are experiencing changes in their economic situation, including military base closures. Local governments like Marquette County are awarded funding based on the merits of the community's adjustment strategy and the potential for private sector investment in the new industries that will help to strengthen the economic base of the area.
