DETROIT - Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., announced today that the Department of Transportation has awarded a grant of $3 million to Bishop International Airport in Flint for the final phase of the rehabilitation and extension of a runway and taxiway. The grant is aimed at bolstering airport safety and efficiency. Earlier this month, Levin announced grants for 12 other Michigan airports. Cumulatively, the grants to Michigan airports exceed $30 million including an additional $3.3 million for phase three of the runway rehabilitation at Bishop International. "Flint's Bishop International is a heavily traveled airport and this funding will help make it more efficient with an updated infrastructure," Levin said. "The grant will complete the final phase of the project to rehabilitate a runway vital to the airport." Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant awards combine entitlement funding, which airports receive from the FAA annually, and discretionary funds, which are determined by a competitive selection process among airports which have applied for funding for specific renovations and improvements. Today's $3 million AIP grant is discretionary funding. The following page lists all of the Michigan grant recipients.
