Building the cradle of liberty / J.L.G. Ferris. The artist Jean Leon Gerome Ferris depicts Andrew Hamilton with a young woman on one arm and an elderly woman on the other. They are discussing building plans with a foreman during the construction of Independence Hall (shown in the background) in Philadelphia sometime between 1732 and 1740; Hamilton's carriage stands to the right. Starting in the early 20th century, Ferris created a series of commemorative interpretations of early American development called "The Pageant of a Nation."
