Statement of Senator Levin on Marathon Oil Corporation's Decision to Expense Stock Options

WASHINGTON – Senator Carl Levin, D-Mich., made the following statement today on Marathon Oil's decision to report stock options granted to executives and other employees as an expense.

"I applaud the decision of Marathon Oil Corporation, the largest oil refinery in my home state of Michigan and a top employer in Detroit, to begin expensing stock options. Momentum continues to build for the honest accounting of stock options, with over two dozen leading companies in the energy, manufacturing, publishing, real estate, financial and high tech industries taking action to expense stock option compensation.

"The next step is to level the playing field so that all corporations finally recognize options as an expense on their books. I will continue to fight to make that happen, along with Senator John McCain and others who care about this issue."
