In the 18th century, calligraphy was high art for certain skilled scribes. This set of Christmas cards captures four festive images from Calligraphia Latina (Dissertatio epistolaris de calligraphaiae nomenclatione), by Johann Georg van Schwab, Vienna, 1756. The strikingly-beautiful initial letters recall an age when meticulous attention to detail was de rigueur. A cherub, reindeer, snowflake, and exquisite lacy design provide the subtle backgrounds for these greetings. Cards open from the front center, leaving ample room for a personal message inside.
