Edward Penfield, was a highly influential illustrator, art editor, and poster artist who is frequently connected with the Harper magazine covers he did for many years. He designed almost every Harper cover from 1893 to 1899. His work is considered at the highest rank of American illustration. His design and draftsmanship were gifts that led Publisher's Weekly to say, "The advertising poster has within recent years actually soared into the regions of art." His use of abstraction and simplified shapes were stylistic trademarks that reflected his sophisticated appreciation of the best of the Japanese, French, and British efforts. In addition to Harper's, he worked for Collier's, the Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal and many others. He work was considered highly effective for advertising and it appeared in ad's for Kodak, Arrow, Pierce Arrow Automobiles and many others. He served as President of the American Society of Illustrators and is often credited with originating the poster in the United States.
