This brass commemorative coin is a tribute to the Library's mission of collecting and sharing the wisdom of all civilizations. Thomas Jefferson's passionate quotation about books is featured on the front of the coin. He made the statement in 1815 to his friend John Adams. Jefferson's connection to the Library of Congress can be traced to his personal library of more then 6,500 books eventually purchased by the government for the Library of Congress, following the War of 1812. The open book and torches of learning on the coin's reverse are a recurring motif in the Jefferson Building and symbolize the importance of learning in a knowledge-based democracy.
