The Three Wise Men On the left, Balthsar offers the purest incense, frankincense. Made from the dried resin of Boswellia trees, its white smoke represents the prayers of the people rising toward Heaven. The Wise Men received the gift of faith in exchange for this offering. In the center, Mechior ("white one") presents gold, which the Holy Family used to flee into Egypt and thus avoid King Herod's slaughter of all male infants. The gift of charity was given to the Wise Men. On the right, Gaspar, traditionally the youngest of the trio, gives myrrh, a gum used medicinally to purge worms and strengthen children. In exchange, the Wise Men acquired truth and humility. Joseph Leyendecker produced 320 covers for the Saturday Evening Post, including a 1906 effort that developed into the tradition of depicting the New Year as a baby.
