Ema Spencer was associated with the Clarence White School of Photography that he started in 1914. By the time White started his school, Spencer had been taking pictures for decades. White is less well know as a teacher, but many first line photographers of the period started in his school. Margaret Bourke-White, Anton Bruehl, Dorothea Lange, Paul Outerbridge, Jr., Karl Struss, and Doris Ulmann are a few of the more famous people who honed their skills with White. There is little information on the work of Ema Spencer. Her work was acquired by Warren and Margot Coville because of her association with the first American school of art photography, the Clarence H. White School of Photography. The Coville's donated 218 prints and related materials by Clarence H. White and many of his students.
