RSC Lauds Supreme Court Decision to Overturn Unconstitutional D.C. Gun Ban

Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, today issued the following statement after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that Washington, D.C.’s ban on handguns was unconstitutional:
“Today, the Supreme Court finally opened the door for citizens of the District of Columbia to have the second amendment protection as the rest of our country.
“For over 30 years, the D.C. handgun ban has prevented law abiding citizens from purchasing legal guns to be used for legitimate reasons – such as self-defense, hunting, and sport shooting – while doing little to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. D.C. residents will finally have the same rights as their countrymen to bear arms and defend themselves from violent crime.
“The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Washington D.C.’s ineffectual and unconstitutional handgun ban is a major victory for individual freedom, liberty, and common sense. This decision shows the importance of appointing judges to the Court who respect the rule of law, recognizes the liberties guaranteed to every citizen, and strictly applies the Constitution and laws.”
