Susa, one of the oldest known cities, was founded around 4,000 B.C. in the beautiful plain of present-day Khuzistan in Iran. Starting in 1897, the city was explored by a French expedition that found masterpieces of Mesopotamian art brought there as war booty, as well as traces of the Elamite civilization. At the beginning of the second millennium, the inhabitants of Susa prospered thanks to trade with Mesopotamia. They wore gold, and especially silver, jewelry. Discovered inside their tombs were decorations to be worn on the head and over women's chests, as well as earrings and simply shaped rings that nonetheless show great craftsmanship.
These beautiful hoop earrings were inspired by jewelry traditionally worn and made in Susa, around 200 B.C. to 200 A.D. The original earring, made of gold, was found in Susa, Iran. It originates from the period of the Parthian Empire. To economize on precious metal, the classic technique of the Ancient Orient was to roll fine gold leaf on a core made of pitch, a malleable material found in nature.
