  • The 2008 rainy season was marked by a good start, regularity, and distribution of rains in most Sahelian countries and West Africa. Production for cereals and other crops in these areas is expected to be good overall.
  • Prices for cereals and other foodstuffs have largely been rising since January, and up to exceptional levels between July and August 2008 for rice and wheat, staple foods for some country populations or food-deficit areas. Since September 2008, with the arrival of new harvests of certain products on the market, cereals prices are stabilizing or declining, except those of rice and wheat. The upward trend in food prices, notably of imported goods, is eroding household purchasing power, particularly of the most poor.
  • Good rainfall recorded in the sub-region has replenished pasture and water points for livestock. Animal health conditions are stable, save for a few cases of infectious disease reported in some areas. Given these conditions, livestock prices are increasing in the Sahel and West Africa and remain above the five-year average.
