Canadian government resource providing free access to a variety of online maps related to environment, demography, the economy, climate, and other topics. The site also includes digitized images from previous editions of the Atlas. In English and French.
Canada Maps, Perry-Castañeda Library (University of Texas)
Extensive collection of digitized maps from a major research collection. Includes a list of historical maps from published sources.
Canadian County Atlas Project
Project from McGill University's Digital Collections Program, making available digitzed maps from 19th-century Canadian county atlases. The database can be searched by personal name or via clickable county maps.
Canadian Geographical Names (Gazeteer) Web Query
Web interface for the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) providing information about locations and geographical features in Canada. Searchable by place name with various limit options.
David Rumsey Collection
Private collection of thousands of maps that can be viewed over Internet as a free public resource. The collection includes maps of Canada and its provinces and territories. Maps can be viewed in a variety of formats, some of which require that Java and/or pop-ups be enabled on your browser.
Environment Canada
Official website for the government agency responsible for environmental issues such as air and water quality, climate change, and related topics. In English and French.
Geography and Map Reading Room, Library of Congress
Primary entry point for information on the Library’s extensive collections of maps and atlases, including materials dealing with Canada and its various administrative subdivisions. Many of these have been digitized, and are available online at “Map Collections: 1500-2004"; these can be searched by keyword or place name. Printed materials can be searched via the Library’s online catalog.
Images of Early Maps on the Web: North America and Canada
From the World Wide Web Virtual Library portal to the history of cartography, a listing of early map image sites. A number of the sites in this page include maps of the separate regions of Canada and the United States.
Map Machine (National Geographic Society)
The Society’s online map collection can be browsed by location. The brief entries for Canada includes basic information and links to digitized National Geographic Society maps of the continent. Maps can also be searched by keyword or place name via the “Quick Map Search” on most Map Machine pages.
Meteorological Service of Canada
Official government website with weather predictions, storm predictions, marine and aviation weather, and other features. Information can be accessed via an interactive map of Canada or browsed by location. Current radar and satellite imagery is available, as is climate data. In English and French.
Population and Demography
Demographic statistics from Canada’s central statistical agency. This site provides data on such topics as ethnic origin, first nations, immigration, languages, and religion.
The United States Office of Coast Survey's Historical Map and Chart Collection
Collection of thousands of maps and charts from the late 1700s to the present, including historical maps that depict the borders of Canada, as well as such notable maps as those of Vancouver's explorations. The Collection includes early nautical charts, hydrographic surveys, topographic surveys, geodetic surveys, city plans and battle maps. The Historical Map and Chart Project scans maps and charts and offers the images free to the public.
