A premier American research institution in India which provides fellowship for study in India and maintains several long-term projects and collections.

Agency under the Department of Culture since 1861 that identifies, preserves, and protects the cultural heritage of India. Features information on several thousand monuments in India and includes reports, monographs, and large list of publications, and information on training programs.

The Asia Foundation, based in San Francisco, is a private non-profit, non-governmental organization working to promote the mutual interests of the USA and the countries of Asia and the Asia Pacific region. The website contains perspective papers and project reports on the countries where the Asia Foundation is active.

One of the oldest scholarly organizations of its kind, the Society conducts "inquiry into the history and antiquities, arts, sciences and literature of Asia." Presents a history of the Society, information on its library, museum, and includes lists of publications and past Society presidents.

Society founded in 1804 to "encourage the study of and research in the Languages, Philosophy, Arts and Natural & Social Sciences in relation to Asia, in general and India, in particular." Presents a history of the Society, list of publications, organizational structure, and membership information. Includes a list of "important treasures" from the library, and tables of contents from "Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bombay" (since 1992).

Presents a large number of pertinent laws and regulations relating to the financial market, circulars and directives concerning mutual funds, primary markets, secondary markets and venture capital, and foreign investors. Includes press releases arranged by topic (archived since 1996) and annual reports (archived since 1996; most recent also available in PDF format). Site search function.

Bombay Natural History Society  (http://www.bnhs.org/)
Established in 1883, as one of the largest NGOs in India engaged in nature conservation research. Component agencies include ENVIS Centre for Avian Ecology and Inland Wetlands, Environmental Impact Assessment Cell, The Sa�lim Ali Nature Conservation Fund, Sa�lim Ali Loke Wan Tho Ornithological Research Fund, Conservation Committee, University of Mumbai, and the Conservation Education Centre. The site provides the scope and project descriptions of each component.

Research institute which studies "basic and applied ecology." The site offers information about the Institute, a discussion group on sustainable forest use, online access to the journal Current Science from August 1998, and an ecclectic list of links under "Miscellaneous."

Children's Book Trust  (http://www.childrensbooktrust.com/)
India's largest children's publisher, Children's Book Trust of India was founded in 1957 in Delhi. CBT also operates a library, the Indraprastha Press, a doll museum, a children's center, sponsors international writing and painting contests for children, and publishes a children's magazine, "Children's World." The site describes their operations with photos and pictures of book covers along with ordering information. Some of the titles are in Hindi.

Agency with statuary authority for the implementation and monitoring of standards for the airworthiness, safety and operations of aircraft, flight crew training and standards, and air transport operations. The site provides lists of public and private airplanes and legislation relating to air travel. Includes information on flight schools, pilot examinations, and other general avaiation information.

Government institute established in 1949 to regulate the accounting profession in India. The Institute operates through ninety field offices with over 80,000 members. NGO that provides a forum for international exchange of cultural knowledge and expression. The Centre organizes talks, discussions and symposia between scholars and leaders from India and abroad. Collective body of universities and research institutions, involved in teaching, research and related activities in the social sciences. The Association facilitates and promotes research and training activities and cooperation among institutions for information exchange, workshops and conferences, and publication of books and reports. Management-training institute established in 1982 in Bhopal to develop knowledge useful for managers in the areas of forestry, environment, and natural resources management and allied sectors. Offers degree programs and undertakes consultancy work for national and international clients from government, industry and other allied sectors. Two agencies formed from the defunct Ministry of Surface Transport responsible for formulating and implementing India's policies concerning "ship building and ship repair, major ports, national waterways, ship chartering, national highways, road transport, inland water transport and transport research." Agency of the Government of Karnataka that works with local village leaders on the productivity of agriculture and other economic activities of rural areas, as well as improving the quality of infrastructure and services. The site contains Karnataka Panchayat Raj Acts and Rules, official orders and notices, details on rural development schemes, annual and monthly progress reports.

Large organization which promotes education issues amongst Muslims in India, with 1,900 chapters. The site contains information on the organization, press releases, articles and essays of interest to Muslim students, and an on-line chat room.

Tamilnadu Corporation for Development of Women, Ltd.  (http://www.tamilnaduwomen.org/)
Incorporated in 1983 and funded by Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India, the corporation strives to enhance the economic empowerment of women in Tamil Nadu state through programs providing credit for small businesses, vocational training, and a women's welfare center. Activities are coordinated with selected nongovernmental organizations and other training institutions. The site offers a large amount of information on the organization's, structure, activities, events, etc. and includes many reports (.doc format) and a long page of links to related organizations.

Web site of the telecommunications regulatory agency of the Government of India. Features a large amount of offical documents, acts, policies, regulations and other administrative material pertaining to telecommunications, information technology and mass media.

V.V. Giri National Labour Institute  (http://www.vvgnli.org/)
Labor organization that conducts and assists in organizing, training, and education programs, coordinates research, analyzes problems encountered in planning and implementing labor programs, and maintains library and information services. Areas of research include labor market studies, employment relations and regulations, and agrarian relations and rural labor studies. The Institute also houses the National Research Centre on Labour Information and the National Research Centre for Child Labor. Working Women's Forum (India)  (http://www.workingwomensforum.org/index1.htm)
Initiated in 1978 Working Women's Forum is an organization of poor women workers seeking to reverse the oppressions of caste, class and gender. Based in Chennai and operating mostly in southern India, programs include unionization, a credit cooperative network, reproductive and child health services, vocational training, child labor, leadership training. The site includes some statistical information on WWF's programs and membership.
