About a week ago, a couple friends came over and brought some delicious beer and a cake baked with Irish whiskey. And of course, we needed to eat. So we made food with beer -- a potato dish with a nice oatmeal stout. It was delicious. The stout was Young's Oatmeal Stout but we drank Ommegang and Smuttynose Winter Ale as well.

It was the first chance I'd had to try Ommegang Abbey Ale which is a dark beer with a great taste. And the Smuttynose Winter Ale is similar to a Belgian Abbey Double making it a perfect complement to a delicious dinner and to the Ommegang.

We here at the Daily Drink are ditching some very silly New Year's resolutions. That's right, we're falling off the wagon again just in time for the Obama presidency.

As we shift into the weekend before Barack Obama's Inauguration, you might want to enjoy a cocktail in celebration or possibly to commiserate with a bottle of something about a change you're not happy about. Either way, we've got a couple topical drinks to suggest for this historic event. And you can choose from liquor or beer.

It just so happened that our first family exercise in bread-making coincided with Little L's inaugural stomach virus and our scheduled trip to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico tomorrow. Grandma and grandpa are eagerly waiting to see their grandchild, but they may be getting way more "family fun" than they bargained for.
