National Trails Day — June 7, 2008

National Trails Day, American Hiking SocietyTrails provide Americans with a variety of opportunities to improve their health through physical activity. National Trails Day, which is held the first Saturday of every June, unites hundreds of organizations, parks, retailers, and health providers that are hosting events with information and activities honoring trails across the United States.

Offers information on National Trails celebration events being held across the nation on June 7, 2008. This site also provides information about hikers, trail advocates, and a variety of hiking topics, including trail locations, volunteer opportunities, and legislative and policy issues affecting trails.

CDC Trails For Health
Although regular physical activity offers many health benefits, people who are seeking ways to become more active often overlook the opportunities that trails offer.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC)*
A non-profit organization whose purpose is to enrich America's communities and countryside by creating a nationwide network of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors.

Rivers and Trails and Conservation Assistance Program
The Rivers and Trails Program is a National Park Service that works with community groups and local and state governments to conserve rivers, preserve open space, and develop trails and greenways.

The Task Force on Community Preventive Services*
This task force provides recommendations for population-based interventions to promote health and prevent disease, injury, disability, and premature death, appropriate for use by communities and healthcare systems.
