The National Register's Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) presents its newest online lesson plan, "The North Carolina State Capitol: Pride of the State". Learn why early 19th-century public buildings in the United States were designed in the Greek Revival architectural style while exploring North Carolina's state capitol on Union Square in downtown Raleigh, a city specifically created in 1792 to serve as North Carolina's permanent capital. This newest TwHP lesson plan, complete with visual photos, readings, floor plans and a map showing early meeting sites for the state legislature, is created for both educators and students to use as a research tool. North Carolina became a royal colony in 1729, but royal rule ended in 1775 when the royal Governor fled during the Revolutionary War.
