British Museum
National musuem founded in 1753 and housing an enormous collection of art and artifacts from prehistory to the present day. The site search feature can be used to search for images of items from the museum collection.
The Imperial War Museum
The I.W.M.’s collection covers all aspects of twentieth and twenty-first century conflict involving Britain and the Commonwealth. The site provides information about the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms and collection overviews--short essays on major historical themes leads the user to selected highlights from all the collections and a searchable database with descriptions of over 160,000 items and online access to over 6,000 highlights from the collection, including photographs, works of art, audio extracts, aircraft and vehicles, documents and library material.
The Museum of London
Public museum funded jointly by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Corporation of London. It collections include over a million items relating to London from the prehistoric period to the present day.
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA)
Public entity sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. It acts as an advocate for museums, libraries, and archives and contributes to government policy regarding these institutions.
National Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland (MAGNI)
This official portal includes links to the websites for the Ulster Museum with Armagh Museum, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum and the Ulster American Folk Park.
Amguedda Cymru/National Museum Wales
Provides links to Welsh collections of art, archaeology, geology, natural, social and industrial history.
National Museums of Scotland
This is the website for Scotland’s national museum service. The website provides links to the Museum of Scotland, the Museum of Flight, the Museum of Rural Life, the National Museum of Costume, the National War Museum of Scotland, and the National Piping Centre (which houses the piping collections of the National Museum of Scotland).
The Natural History Museum
The UK's national museum of nature with vast collections in botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology, and zoology.
The Northern Ireland Museums Council
The Council is a company with charitable status principally funded by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure for Northern Ireland. The site provides a full list of the museums in Northern Ireland with information about each.
Scottish Museums Council
The Scottish Museums Council is the membership organization for local museums and galleries in Scotland. The website provides information and links to museums in Scotland by area or name.
The 24 Hour Museum
This "National Virtual Museum" functions as an online gateway to publicly funded UK museums, galleries, and heritage attractions. Content includes daily arts and museum news as well as exhibition reviews and in-depth online trails.
Victoria and Albert Museum
This South Kensington museum of art and design, known as "the V&A," houses collections from around the world and spanning 300 years, including ceramics, furniture, fashion, glass, jewelry, metalwork, photographs, sculpture, textiles and paintings. The V&A is part of a family of museums consisting of The Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green, a collection one of the world's largest and oldest collections of toys and childhood artifacts dating from the 16th century to the present day, and the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden. The Theatre Museum is the National Museum of the Performing Arts and houses a collection of material relating to the British stage representing all the live performing arts.
