President Elect Leaves for Washington DC

“I now leave, not knowing when, or whether ever, I may return, with a task before me greater than that which rested upon Washington." Abraham Lincoln left his home of seventeen years to serve as president of a nation on the verge of Civil War. The Lincoln home has been restored to its 1860 appearance, revealing Lincoln as husband, father, and politician and is open to the public for guided tours.

Lincoln Bicentennial Programs at Lincoln Home National Historic Site

February 2009

Lincoln Home National Historic Site will be commemorating the Lincoln Bicentennial events during the long Lincoln birthday weekend, from February 11-15, 2009, in a variety of ways. Programs will feature not only Abraham Lincoln but also his contemporaries highlighting their combined legacy to America. Special living history and Ranger programs on a variety of topics will be presented in the Lincoln home and neighborhood throughout the weekend. On February 11, Lincoln home staff will participate in a recreation of Lincoln’s dramatic February 11, 1861, “Farewell to Springfield” which will be presented to over 2,000 area fifth graders and the general public. On February 12, Lincoln Home NHS will present a family reading program for children with actors portraying Abraham Lincoln; African American Civil War soldier Andrew Lewis; and, Underground Railroad hero Harriet Tubman. Children’s book authors will also be available to sign their books. The day will then focus on new Lincoln scholarship as Lincoln’s scholars offer their views of “The Literary Lincoln” and “The Personal Lincoln.” For detailed information on planned programs and events, please click this link: More...
