A New Birth of Freedom

The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory in the summer of 1863 that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy", it was the war's bloodiest battle with 51,000 casualties. It also provided President Abraham Lincoln with the setting for his most famous address.

Park Events & Ranger Programs

Gettysburg National Military Park offers a full range of summer ranger programs (mid-June through mid-August), battlefield walks, evening campfire programs, and other special events including living history groups and band concerts. During the winter months the park offers a special series of indoor programs entitled Key Moments and Commanders Series. The New Museum and Visitor Center

Here is where you should begin your visit to Gettysburg National Military Park! The new Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center is now open to the public. Funded through donations coordinated by the Gettysburg Foundation, the new facility had its grand opening on September 26, 2008. The center features a museum gallery on the Civil War and Gettysburg, the film "A New Birth of Freedom", and the conserved Gettysburg Cyclorama.

Camp Life, Civil War Collections

The life of the Civil War soldier is a main feature of our new museum and visitor center. Many of the objects on display are directly related to the people and places highlighted in each display case. Climate

Summers can be hot and humid, with occasional severe thunderstorms. Fall and spring are pleasant with average temperatures in the upper 40's and brisk winds. Winters can be wet with occasional snow that forces the closure of some park roads and buildings depending on severity.
