For the first twenty years of the twentieth century, horses continued to
work on city streets
as an important part of the transportation system, just as they had been
in the nineteenth century.
Horse-drawn vehicles coexisted with newer means of transportation and cartage (DN-0050752).
There were commuter railway trains between the suburbs and the central business district (the
Loop), elevated trains running above the streets (DN-0004591, DN-0001383, DN-0007938),
electric-powered streetcars (trolley cars) running on rails along the streets (DN-0053380),
and new gasoline-powered automobiles and trucks as well. But for the
early years of the twentieth
century, horse power predominated over automobiles on city streets (DN-0006986).
